History....

This is what is said regarding Winnipeg's "Hotel Fort Garry":
"The Fort Garry Hotel is designated as a national historic site. Since 1913, this former Grand Trunk Pacific Railway hotel has stood as a symbol of Winnipeg's importance as a North American transportation hub and of the prairie city's affinity for old world elegance. One of Winnipeg's most prestigious landmarks, The Fort Garry is now in its 10th decade. In recent years, this grand hotel has enjoyed an unparalleled renaissance, winning new admirers and accolades from patrons and guests as the hotel approaches its 100th year on Broadway.
One of the city's most recognizable structures and a national landmark, The Fort Garry has defined the Winnipeg skyline for over 90 years. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway decided to build The Fort Garry in 1911 when it completed the link between its east and west lines. The site chosen on Broadway Avenue was just one block from the railway's Union Station."
And whilst my mother originated from Winnipeg, when my older brother was born he was named after the Winnipeg version of the name "Garry". I have roots there...and now our son lives there too. Funny how family history can begin in a certain place, move elsewhere and further on down the road, picks up where it began.
History to me is fascinating. The Johnston Terminal has quite a history as well. Here is a bit of it:
"Back in the 1920s, the Terminal was a distribution warehouse serving the booming rail industry. Now it is a venue for an array of boutiques, cultural displays and the large restaurant chain, the Old Spaghetti Factory (The) . It is adjacent to the Forks Market , downtown's shopping and cultural centre."
These two buildings hold a slice of history - two buildings that had direct ties to the railroad industry....in a city that is tied to my roots.
I guess that's enough history for one day!
