Sharing his meal...

We broke off pieces of bread this night, dipped it in the juice and ate it...in remembrance....

The narrator around our table told the story from the book of Luke about the last supper Jesus had with his disciples.  There was talk.  There was solemnness.  There were questions.  Jesus told them all that when they shared in the bread and wine in this way that they would do this as a community together, to remember him.  He was about to journey to the cross, a hideous death fit for murders and cutthroats and traitors....... but not before betrayal from some of his closest friends.  They had no idea.  They were all ready to set up a kingdom and overthrow their Roman oppressors.  None of them expected the events that took place in the three days that followed.

It was bad enough that Jesus had to face the mobs who wanted him dead but to have to face the berayal of his friends must have been the most difficult.  God didn't promise him an easy route but it was the only way to show people what real love looked like.  It was pretty messy, a crucifixion always was,  but the end result would change the world.

Tonight around the table, we remembered the conversations that took place as Luke recorded them.  It reminded me somewhat of our own family table sometimes.  Quarrels.  People needing answers.  Those that wanted what they wanted and that was that!!

The next day, following this last supper, would bring death......on a cross.  Jesus' disciples would desert him.  He would be alone and suffering a criminal's death......a death fit for a King????
