The best laid plans...

Some poetry for your evening pleasure...I thought of this poem today as I stayed home from work.  I HAD planned on working my day off and saving it up for Christmas but this intestinal bug had me down for the count....three days in a row.  So, my plans for the day did not come to fruition, hence the poem....

To A Mouse by Robert Burns (original wording)

Wee, sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie,
O, what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty
Wi bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,
Wi' murdering pattle.

I'm truly sorry man's dominion
Has broken Nature's social union,
An' justifies that ill opinion
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth born companion
An' fellow mortal!

I doubt na, whyles, but thou may thieve;
What then? poor beastie, thou maun live!
A daimen icker in a thrave
'S a sma' request;
I'll get a blessin wi' the lave,
An' never miss't.

Thy wee-bit housie, too, in ruin!
It's silly wa's the win's are strewin!
An' naething, now, to big a new ane,
O' foggage green!
An' bleak December's win's ensuin,
Baith snell an' keen!

Thou saw the fields laid bare an' waste,
An' weary winter comin fast,
An' cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell,
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro' thy cell.

That wee bit heap o' leaves an' stibble,
Has cost thee monie a weary nibble!
Now thou's turned out, for a' thy trouble,
But house or hald,
To thole the winter's sleety dribble,
An' cranreuch cauld.

But Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

Still thou are blest, compared wi' me!
The present only toucheth thee:
But och! I backward cast my e'e,
On prospects drear!
An' forward, tho' I canna see,
I guess an' fear!

I recall taking this poem in high school and having to memorize it and be able to discuss at length (on paper) it's meaning.  I found it most interesting and fun actually.  The older one gets, the more pertinent the words become.  We really aren't much different from a little mouse....it too, makes plans for food and shelter, but the plans all of us make, mice and humans alike, sometimes just don't work out the way we thought they would. We tend to look back on our past miseries and fear the future...and so, in that sense, the mouse is much more blessed than we for not having to experience those kinds of things.

As for me...I'd still rather be a person.

On that note, I received a potted mum from a good friend as a kind of "house warming" gift the other day.

Beauties aren't they?  The sun captured their loveliness this afternoon.  And I captured the sun's loveliness this evening...
Blessings on your night...

A peek...

Not many pictures on the walls yet, nor curtains of any sort, but we're here, settled and enjoying apartment life to the full.  I didn't get a pic of the spare bedroom, from whence I type my daily ramblings....

Now, to get rid of this intestinal bug...that is bugging me....

Torture...

Why torture myself, I ask...

I guess SOME exercise is better than NONE...and acquasize seems to fit the bill....I reply to myself...

Aquasize.

Something to do with water....aqua

Something to do with ones size...

Hopefully the water changes ones size.

I think it should then be renamed to "aquathighs"! 'cause my thighs could use some shifting and changing, and if it happens to take place in the water, so be it!

I wonder if there's another class for "aquabust"...or how about "aquabutt"....

Just wonderin'.....:-)

Football and old movies...

After a morning "toast and coffee" at the Dub, we simply had a day to relax.

But not before leftovers at noon, with family over.

THEN my man watched football and I watched old movies on TCM.

What a great way to get peaceful.

THEN we had the fam over again to share turkey buns with dressing at supper, made a plate up for the son-in-law who will be home today, and continued on with the old movie marathon.

Boggy and Bacall....Cary Grant....Bette Davis.....what more could a classic movie lover ask for, I say.

I did do some posting on Facebook with some pics too...and that takes a whack of time!

Now, it's on to Halloween.....I wonder if we will have snow like we did last year???  Yikes!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We waited for our company to arrive to fill up the open spaces at the table.  Our first major holiday meal in the new place.  Lots of room to maneuver except in the kitchen...where it got a slight bit overheated at one point and the cook threatened to quit....other than that, good times!  Small kitchens with only one sink and not much room to do the details of getting the food on the table can try ones patience, but we made it without calling 911.  At one point I did have visions of a pot of potatoes on the cook's head....my own doing, of course, but graciousness prevailed....thank the good Lord.

Now it's feet up and a good nights sleep....

+23????

That's just crazy stuff!  I remember the year it snowed 30 cms. on Thanksgiving weekend...back in....can't remember...'01????  Brittney and I sat on our couch and watched the snow continue to pile up on our deck with the fireplace going and watching old movies.

But today is another story.  Warm wind, hot temps, no jackets, bare feet.  Ya gotta' love it.

I hate to wish away my life but....I wished it was next summer already......

Ya, that's why I can't wait for summer.  We shall attempt to have some kind of vacation NEXT year!

Like the "good old days"...

Before my time, folks used to trade for goods or services required.  If you were a mechanic and you needed food, you might go to your neighbor who grew a garden and ask if he wanted to trade some work on his tractor for a bushel of spuds.  Or if you were a baker and you needed to get to town for a fancy shin-dig you may ask someone to pick you up with their rig for a few loaves of bread and a chocolate layer cake.

Well, getting my computer fixed ended up being something just like that.  I knew a fellow (friend #1) who had great computer skills so he fixed my home computer and I gave him a just-out-of-the-oven pumpkin pie and some homemade hot dog relish.  Another fellow (friend #2) had some programs that my computer needed so he hopped in his car and brought them over to friend #1's so he could do the installation.  I shall give friend #2 his pie at church on Sunday.  They wouldn't take cash so we all used our little talents to get a job done...and everyone was happy....hopefully.....well, for sure I am.  I can now blog away to my heart's content.

It looks like the beginning of a great Thanksgiving weekend.....

Thought I'd make an apple pie too, while I was at it for our company on Sunday...I think one likes pumpkin pie but the other would rather have a different kind...so apple it is!!!  Turkey is in the sink thawing, yam is purchased as is the whipping cream for the pies....dry bread awaits being turned into savory dressing and all is ready for the feast.

Yes, we do have so much to be thankful for!  I'm thankful for those good old days, that taught us how to work together towards a common good.....it's how I got my computer fixed.:-)
