I watched that 1944 movie this evening staring Judy Garland with Vincente Minnelli directing. A deliciously warm family movie and worth seeing time and time again.
It was in this movie that Garland and Minnelli fell in love and married and had a daughter Liza, also a famous actress in her own right.
I get emotional watching this movie too...sad, I suppose. The story is about a family whose father is being transferred to New York city and the entire family is upset about the prospect of leaving their St. Louis home, the memories and relationships and all that is familiar. It reminds me of us leaving our old home where our children grew up...where I grew up....leaving it all behind. I cry at this point in the movie as it takes place on a Christmas Eve, a memory-filled night for me to begin with. Judy is wearing the most beautiful red velvet gown I have ever seen and she sings "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".....what's not to cry about that!!!
