The river ice moved. That's a sure sign of spring...the cycle of the river continues on....
It took me by surprise. Glancing out the window, the entire river was moving in one enormous wave of ice. I hobbled back to get my camera. By the time I looked again, only the south side was forging ahead. Right now it isn't moving at all. So, I most likely noticed the very beginnings of the annual ice breakup of the North Saskatchewan River. I don't think I have ever witnessed it before in it's infancy. Many times I have seen huge sheets of ice moving to the east, attempting to free itself from it's wintry grave. Today, it was more like a whisper, a secret being told from one sprawling chunk of ice to another. Further downstream I could see them gathering with nowhere to go.
Perhaps it will look presentable in a few days. But for now, it pushes forward with nothing to stop that force from completing its cycle of life. Kind of like a belaboured mother bearing a child....the force of nature bringing forth new life...exhausting....exhilarating....and sweet.
Nature is grand...and wild....and peaceful....all at the same time.
