I remember....

I remember the stories that would be told by my dad at various times....usually after a few snorts under his belt, which wasn't very often, that would in some way convey the seriousness of war...the visual, visceral ways that young men would see life with new eyes, down the barrel of a Sten gun.  It wasn't pretty.  I heard about dad having to scoop up the intestines of his buddy and shove them back into his stomach cavity while he waited for a medic to appear out of the ravages about them.  And through tears how another friend ended up in a tree nearby....well, a part of him at least.  Not much was spoken of the war at home.  Dad didn't like to speak of it.  At one point, I remember him taking all of his medals and throwing them out.  He wanted nothing to remind him of what had taken place for those nearly four long years.  I often wonder how long it took dad to really become "normal" again and how much it affected him in ways I will never know about.  He took much of those feelings with him to the grave.  I wonder what I would have done, how I would have handled that kind of thing had it been me.  I think, like he, I would rather have repressed those things than have to deal with them.  Easier, I suppose.  I remember him speaking of the various battles he was engaged in...the taking of the bridge in Remagen, the liberation of the starving Dutch people in Holland, the beauty of the countryside along the way....the hearing of Strauss music in a huge theatre in Germany.  I suppose there were times when he could see things other than what was actually going on around him.  So many didn't get to come home...but being that he did, I'm able to write these few things on here tonight.:-)  That offer of sacrifice allowed me so much more than writing on a blog...it has given me freedom of expression and appreciation for our nation that stands proudly in the shadow of all those who fought against an evil in the world....not a people....but an evil.  It's difficult to think about how the world would be presently had this evil been allowed to ripen and blossom year after year.

So, thanks Dad.  I probably never really said those words like that while you were still here with me but I think you knew how much I appreciated you for what you did for me....and everyone else.

Here's to you Dad....for being valiant, courageous, afraid and undaunting.  I salute you!

Dad, second from right, top row. "X" marks those who died.

Dad's flashing and mom's letter.

Dad right with his buddy.

Mother and Dad...just married... and Dad waiting to be shipped out.

We may make it to the ceremony at the armory tomorrow.  It was worth the time spent last year.

A batty day....

Joe and Jody, for their Masters Program, are studying bats....like in "bats in your belfrey"!  I called them Bat-man and Bat-woman, quite appropriate, I figured.  They came into the office to speak to some of our knowledgeable folks at the Forest Centre and my co-worker and I got to see this beautiful creature up close and personal.  Joe used a glove to hold him, for obvious reasons. He was an older bat, they could tell, because his teeth were pretty worn down.  We have a dozen species of bats in Saskatchewan, second highest amount over any other place.  Incredible.  I do think bats have been given a bad rap.  This little guy was an older male.  They captured him and put a micro-chip under his skin on his belly.  Cool.  They brought a "bat buster" with them....pics up a bats sonar, so they know where they are.  If you don't like bats, look away.  Here are some pictures of....uhhhhhh......Joe said they would name him some time this week.  They give them names alphabetically, like the hurricanes.

Here we go:

Cute!

Bat wing....beautiful!!!

Ya, he'd bite alright...I would bite too being caught in
a head-lock by a big yellow glove!

A micro-chipped belly.

No darn wonder they hear so well and
can fly at lightening speed in the dark!

Co-worker Twila with Joe and Jody, scientists.

The sonar machine.  Pretty cool.
Have a lovely sleep now....:-)

Not enough rest...

I'm beginning to feel like I should sleep for 3 days straight.  Too much going on and my body is beginning to rebel.  It's not a good feeling....

I think I'll head off to slumber land....unless I wake to find I'm sick, which is how I feel presently.

Nite all.....tomorrow is another day and a blessing to be alive.

What goes with what....

I'm so incompetent when it comes to matching things.  I'm attempting to put frames to some pictures and get a matting that looks like it should be there.  I'm just not good at it.  I suppose if I had a lot of money I'd simply go to the framing guy/gal and let them pick out the proper colors but as it is, I get my matting from the dollar store and frames either at Value Village or WalMart whichever is cheapest and best.

I think a class in this sort of thing is in order.  Not only a matting class but a photography class.  Retirement is only 399 working days from now....not too long to wait!

I ordered a whole whack of pictures at a local drug store and some didn't show up when I picked them up.  Another frustration....and just when I'm wanting to get this particular bunch of pictures framed and ready to go for my friend too.

Tomorrow will be better.

We bought some of these today....just to get us in the mood.  It doesn't take much, does it!

Yummmmmmm........

Farewell to the girl....

It was a party.  It was a good time.  It was a time to say farewell and adieu to a fine young woman.  Here are some pics.  She's an emotional person, a fun person and a very encouraging person to have as a team player.

Sky....

Sometimes the sky is just pretty.  The refraction of light makes all kinds of colors.....violet, indigo, blue, green yellow, orange and red...I still remember the spectrum colors.... I recall one teacher taught the "ROY-G-BIV" method of remembering.

I keep thinking of the many ways I'll be able to photograph that sky when I retire and can just go outside whenever I wish...at any time.  The Lord willing, it will be a grand time.

Until then though, I suppose I'll just have to capture bits and pieces whenever the opportunity makes itself known.  It's just that every day the sky is new and different and beautiful and it allows my thoughts to go to the One who saw fit to give us this beauty.  Earth.  A tiny sphere of beauty in the midst of a gigantic universe....which, by the looks of it with the Hubble telescope, has an entirely different beauty all its own.

Exciting stuff.  It all just continues to expand my view of how big God is and how much we still need to learn of the things "out there".  Yes, it is very exciting stuff indeed.

The beginning...???

The last few days have been foggy and frosty....quite foggy this morning actually.  I love days like that.

These pictures show the beginning stages of freeze-up on the old North Saskatchewan.  Chunks of ice begin to form at the edges and continue to collect the pieces floating by until...voila!!!  A frozen river.  Don't you just love the shades of grey and white during the late fall and winter months....well, I do anyway.  I love the subtle shades of grey, especially against a backdrop of frost.

And there are only 53 days left until Christmas, don't forget!
